Finding the Genuine Meaning Of Self Discovery

Hey misfits! Today, we’re going all philosophical and talking about the meaning of self discovery. Now, it seems like such a weird way to talk about getting to know yourself. But that’s basically what it is. You can say, “Oh, I know who I am.”

Do you really?

meaning of self discovery

The meaning of self discovery is a true honesty with yourself.

It is an intimacy with yourself, it goes beyond just wanking, okay? It’s getting to know who you are and what is important to you. Self discovery is the process of discovering who you are, by what you want to connect with and surround yourself with. Is this community for you? Is this having a cause and being really passionate about the environment? Is this constantly chasing knowledge and wanting to study as much as you can?

It can be discovering the impact you want to have on other people and the legacy that you want to leave. Do you know what that means for you? Maybe not. But that is the importance of self discovery. Allowing yourself to ask these questions and explore what these things mean to you. This is how you’re going to figure out what it is that is really going to make you happy.

This isn’t as philosophical as thinking what is the meaning of life.

Because realistically, we all know, it’s 42.

It is a matter of looking at what is important for you. Because no one else is going to be able to tell you. There’s not a book you can read, there’s not a video you can watch, there’s not a formula you can use to quickly figure out who and what it is you are or what you’re here to do.

It’s something you have to go through the journey of life and explore for yourself. If you’re feeling lost, it can have an enormous impact on your mental health. It can stop you from feeling productive, it can make you wonder, “what’s the point of getting up in the morning?” Those are some really self destructive spaces to be in. Going on a journey of self discovery means allowing yourself to lean into the big questions.

What do I want to do when I’m here?

What impact do I want to have on other people, or on the environment? What kind of legacy do I want to leave behind? When you start exploring these questions and looking at what kind of goals you want to set for yourself, you start to see patterns. What kind of future do you want to have for yourself? What do you want today to look like?

You start exploring what direction you can go and suddenly that feeling of being lost isn’t quite so strong anymore. You start to have a purpose, a direction to go after. Finding yourself means understanding the reasons behind your actions, why you do the things that you do. If you’re in a space of self sabotage. understanding why you’re doing that could be the start of getting yourself out of those self destructive patterns and habits.

Looking at your passions – the love that you have for animals, for helping people, for painting, for being creative – can be the start of finding your direction. Understanding why you want to do the things you do moving forward can be key to building your self confidence and identity again.

When you start discovering more about yourself

About who you are and what’s important to you, suddenly you have these defining factors that become your baseline. You become more sure of yourself, you become more confident. When you stand up, you can say to yourself, “You know what, fuck yeah, I know what I’m here to do. I know what I want to do. When I get up in the morning. I know what I want to do with my future with my days. I have the same amount of time every day as everyone else. I want to make sure that I’m using it to the best of my ability.”

So what is the meaning of self discovery? It’s about understanding who you are, and growing with as you move forward, rather than becoming stagnant because you don’t know allow yourself to change. You can’t build a life for yourself on the expectations of others. Self discovery is looking at what life looks like when you’re living it for you, not for someone else, and having the strength to admit when you’re not doing that. It’s a life long adventure, so stop trying to cheat and read the ending at the back of the book.
